Surrogacy

The option of Surrogacy can play a significant role for couples facing medical or social obstacles in achieving their dream of parenthood. In this procedure, a third person, a surrogate mother, carries a pregnancy for the intended parents. It is a complex yet promising opportunity to achieve parenthood.

What exactly is meant by the term surrogacy?

Surrogacy refers to a treatment in which an embryo – created from the fertilization of the intended mother’s or a donor’s eggs with the partner’s or a donor’s sperm – is transferred into another woman’s uterus. This woman, the surrogate mother, carries the embryo and enables the couple to become parents.

When is Surrogacy Considered?

Surrogacy is mainly considered when the intended mother lacks a uterus or cannot become pregnant due to medical reasons without endangering her life.

The Procedure of Surrogacy

The process begins with an IVF treatment using the eggs and/or sperm of the couple. Simultaneously, the uterine lining of the surrogate mother is prepared with carefully selected medications to create the best conditions for embryo implantation. The embryo is then transferred into the surrogate mother’s uterus under precise ultrasound guidance.

Legal Requirements for Surrogacy in Cyprus Surrogacy in Cyprus is subject to specific legal provisions introduced in May 2015. These regulations mainly apply to married couples or couples in registered partnerships residing in Cyprus. It’s important to note that currently, non-Cypriots cannot undergo surrogacy treatment in Cyprus. Changes in legislation are under preparation.

For interested couples - The following legal requirements apply

  • A report from a Gynecologist confirms that the woman of the couple cannot carry a child for health reasons and explains the reasons.
  • A Report from a Psychiatrist. This provides insight into the couple’s psychological condition and suitability for Surrogacy.
  • Police Clearance Certificate. Especially regarding child sexual exploitation, such a certificate is required.

Important Notes

  • No Adoption Required. Adoption of the child born through Surrogacy is unnecessary, as the surrogate mother has no rights to the child.
  • Personal Selection. The surrogate mother’s choice is the couple’s responsibility. We can provide suggestions and assist in initial contact, but the final choice lies with you.
  • Financial Agreement. A financial agreement is reached between the couple and the surrogate mother, determining compensation for the surrogate. This includes reasonable expenses such as medical costs, clothing, travel, dietary and supplementary needs during pregnancy, and loss of income.
  • No Commercial Agencies. Commercial agencies are not authorized to interfere.

We understand that Surrogacy is a challenging decision. Still, with our experience and support, you can be confident that you’re not alone on your path to parenthood.
